Favorite facts about Wilton

Get your kicks on Route 66. Well.... It may not be Route 66 but old Highway/Route 6 was the first interstate highway to travel from coast to coast. All the way from Cape Cod, Massachusetts on the east coast, to San Franscico, California on the west cost. This picturesque highway travels through northern Pennsylvania to Erie. Through Chicago, Illinois. Past Des Moines, Iowa. On to Denver, Colorado. Through the Rocky Mountains. And finally into San Franscico, California. Looks like Wilton is in good standing with some of our nations finest cities.

The missing link..... A few years ago the state of Iowa gave up control of the care of the stretch of Old Highway 6 between Davenport and Wilton. After renaming Interstate-80 along this stretch (they run parallel) to include Route 6, Old Highway 6 was renamed to County Road 927. We like to think you can't rename a classic highway just because it saves a dime, so you will still hear many a Wilton resident refer to 5th street as Old Highway 6.

A rose by any other name.... You may not recognize the name Wilton Iowa but ask many an older person from across the country if they know of Wilton Iowa and they might hit you with a reply like this - "I can't say as I have ever heard of Wilton Iowa but I do remember a town called Wilton Junction. Do you know where that is?". What do you know! Wilton for years was know as Wilton Junction (the Rock Island Railroad passes through the town). About 20 years ago a large company came to town and promised the city that they would build a big mail-order warehouse if the city would shorten its name to Wilton (this saves them a fraction of a cent each time they mail out a letter or package). Thus a name that was recognized across the country has faded into obscurity. That's progress for you.

Chocolate sodas, green rivers, and cherry cokes..... Wilton boasts the oldest ongoing iceream parlor and soda fountain in the United States. Built in 1856, the Wilton Candy Kitchen, lovingly referred to as the "Greek's" has been in operation long before we can remember and still has the best darn chacolate sodas and fountain drinks you can find anywhere. Owners George and Thelma Nopoulos carry on the tradition set by George's father Guss who started this store, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, in 1910. Many a morning will find Ken downtown having coffee with George and the gang, sitting at the front marble counter. Don't forget to check out the many pictures of celebrities that have stopped in for a treat. If you come to visit Mary and Ken's Antiques don't forget to stop by George and Thelma's at 310 Cedar in downtown Wilton. Tell them Ken and Mary sent you.
