July 15, 1871
Thomas Lincoln, youngest son of Abraham and Mary, dies in Chicago, Illinois, at age 18.

July 16, 1882
Mary Lincoln, widow of the president, dies in Springfield, Illinois, at age 63. On the same date in 1849, her father died in Lexington, Kentucky, at age 58.

July 18, 1860
Lincoln writes to his running mate Hannibal Hamlin, introducing himself.
